Every major technological leap changes what we value.

When photography became commonplace, original paintings became more prized.

When streaming gave us every song ever recorded, live music didn’t disappear. It became an experience people were willing to pay even more for.

Artificial intelligence may be about to do something similar.

As AI becomes capable of producing words, images, videos and even software almost instantly, digital output becomes less scarce. We may soon have more content than anyone could ever consume.

What doesn’t become more abundant is reality.

A real conversation.

A practical skill.

A place you’ve genuinely travelled through.

A challenge you’ve actually solved.

Living aboard a narrowboat sits firmly in that category.

There’s nothing virtual about working through a lock flight on a rainy afternoon. Nothing artificial about learning how your boat responds to the tiller, finding a quiet mooring for the night, or gradually becoming competent at something that initially felt intimidating.

These experiences have always had value.

What’s changing is their relative value.

For decades we’ve steadily shifted more of our lives onto screens. Banking, shopping, entertainment, friendships and work have all become increasingly digital. AI simply accelerates that trend.

Paradoxically, that may make the analogue parts of life feel even richer.

People often describe living afloat as feeling more present, but it’s not because canal life is somehow disconnected from modern society. Most liveaboards still use laptops, online banking, video calls and everything else the rest of us rely on.

The difference is that digital life becomes a tool rather than the backdrop to every waking hour.

The physical world gently demands your attention instead.

Weather influences your plans.

The seasons become more noticeable.

The simple rhythm of moving the boat, topping up water or finding tomorrow’s mooring creates a structure that no productivity app could ever design because it wasn’t designed for efficiency. It evolved through necessity.

Ironically, AI may make this lifestyle easier than ever.

If routine work can increasingly be completed in less time, people may find themselves with something surprisingly unfamiliar: choice.

Not necessarily retirement.

Not permanent escape.

Just enough breathing space to spend three or six months living differently.

That’s where experiences like extended life aboard start to look less like an indulgence and more like an investment.

Not because they teach you about technology.

Because they remind you of everything technology can’t do for you.

Artificial intelligence can generate an itinerary.

It can’t give you memories.

It can explain how to steer a narrowboat.

It can’t give you the quiet confidence that comes from doing it yourself.

Perhaps that’s what escaping the rat race increasingly means.

Not rejecting technology.

Simply making sure that, as more of life becomes artificial, enough of your own life remains unmistakably real.

For years, the biggest fear about stepping away from the rat race was financial. Could you afford to take six months out? Would your career recover?

Now there’s a new anxiety.

What if you step away just as artificial intelligence changes everything? What if you return to find your industry transformed, your skills outdated, and everyone else has moved on without you?

It’s an understandable fear.

Technology has a habit of rewarding people who stay close to it. Or at least that’s the story we’ve been told.

But is that actually what’s happening?

Ironically, history suggests the people most at risk are not necessarily those who step away for a while. They’re often the people inside large organisations that adapt slowly, following established processes while technology quietly reshapes the work around them.

The people who deliberately choose something different tend to become more adaptable, not less.

Living aboard a narrowboat for several months won’t teach you how to write better AI prompts. It will teach you something arguably more valuable: how to become comfortable with change.

You stop assuming tomorrow will look exactly like today. You learn to solve unfamiliar problems. You plan ahead, adapt your route when circumstances change, become comfortable asking for advice, and discover that most challenges are easier than they first appear.

They’re surprisingly transferable skills.

Meanwhile, the canals remain wonderfully resistant to the idea that everything should become faster.

A lock still takes as long as it takes. Steering through a bridge hole still requires judgement rather than software. Finding a good mooring still depends on experience, patience and a little common sense. The physical world refuses to be optimised quite as easily as the digital one.

That isn’t because canal life rejects technology.

Quite the opposite.

AI may make it easier than ever to spend time afloat. Remote workers can automate routine tasks and reclaim hours that might otherwise disappear into emails and administration. Researching routes, understanding boating systems or planning a longer journey is becoming simpler every year.

Technology becomes a useful tool rather than the thing organising your entire day.

And perhaps that’s the bigger lesson.

Escaping the rat race has never really been about escaping work. It’s about escaping the feeling that your time belongs entirely to someone or something else.

AI may reduce that pressure. Equally, it may increase expectations, encouraging us to produce more in less time until yesterday’s efficiency simply becomes tomorrow’s baseline.

Nobody knows which way it will go.

The canals offer an interesting perspective because they’ve already lived through several technological revolutions. They survived the railways that made them commercially obsolete. They adapted through motor transport, computers, smartphones and the internet. Today they continue to thrive, just for different reasons.

Perhaps careers will evolve in much the same way.

The people who flourish over the next decade may not be those who spend every waking hour chasing the latest technology. They may be the ones confident enough to step outside the flow occasionally, reflect, learn, adapt and return with a clearer sense of what actually matters.

Spending a season on the canals won’t leave you behind.

It might simply leave you better prepared for a future where adaptability matters more than keeping up.
